Why Start a YouTube Channel After 40?

Being over 40 is not that old! That's something that someone over 40 would say, I know.

BUT, it's true. When I was a kid, I had a young Mum, who had me at 16 and so there was only ever 16 years between us. We were very close with little other support system of male role model involved. It was always us against the world. When I was 13 at high school she was only 29 (she was what's known now as a milf, although that word didn't exist back then!) All my friends parents were in their 50's and 60's and seemed so old. When I turned 21 she was only 37! Like a Sister. When I turned 30, she was only 46. You get my point. So I'd always viewed my Mum as being young, no matter what age she got to. And I could see that with her age came so much knowledge. So much pain experienced by her, but so much learned and overcome. I grew up seeing age as a quality. And after a bad start in life, that things get better with age.

Then when I started to get 'older' I started feeling as though I had nothing good about myself to say. That I was boring and that no one would want to see me on video. And this is where I was at just before starting my YouTube channel on 16th September 2024.

But the truth is, when you get over 40 you KNOW STUFF. You have usually experienced a lot of stuff and have YOUR perspective on it. You are that niche subject / business idea that you've been looking for. And the over 40's are massively under-represented on there. There are millions of people in the world, looking for someone like you / me (even if you feel pretty useless right now... like myself).

I saw this channel at the beginning of September: Silver and Solo and everything just clicked for me. I see Jen's merits, I see what she knows, I see how useful she is, I see how knowledgable she is. I see her perspective. Even though she felt exactly the same as I'm feeling at the beginning of my journey. And she makes me want to ask her stuff, just to get her viewpoint / what she thinks about something. I don't have any role models or any family. Some info: Jen is a 50 something woman that talks about over 50 stuff: retirement, dealing with growing older and (hopefully) wiser and trying to knock off bucket-list items along the way. Topics that are not relevant to me right now, as we're in total different stages in life - but something just clicked.

This September, I stopped putting off starting the Channel and set an ambitious goal to just bloody start 'the thing'. I'd been letting myself down by not starting. And I'm not really like that. I'm a do-er and a go-getter, and I ALWAYS reach my goals - so why was I letting this negative self doubt stop me from doing this? A bout of SELF LOVE is recommended for myself here I think. Not only START, but get my YouTube channel MONETIZED - see my progress videos here (I'd actually started the channel back in 2020 when my body crashed to a stop - I had a breakdown, lost all our money in crypto and turned to ask God/The Universe WTF I should do. I prayed to God, a creator, The Universe (I'm not religious but what happened was a net level experience - and I got some answers - which changed EVERYTHING for us) more on this another time.

We decided that we wanted to completely change our lives but we were stuck, had no money and no possibility of doing it. I initially set the channel up to cement our goals. My thinking was that if I have the account then I'm putting my future self out there so I could start manifesting the life I wanted. I'd done a lot in the past with manifesting, but had lost the ability (it always went away when depression creeped back in or my magical self was buried underneath a lot of shit as it had become). As someone that KNOWS thoughts become things. I started physically implementing some action points so I could then start working on my non-physical self (the most important stuff when it comes to manifesting). I was so lost back then, that I had to start with the physical stuff. And that's what that YouTube channel was.

Working at thinking I'd already achieved the goal and was already YouTubing about my Bali life and achieving my dreams. Then I planned to record my journey and progress to reaching our goal and moving to Bali. But the YouTube channel just sat there, unused, and I never actually started it because it all felt too impossible and that no one would want to listen to a 40 year old casing her dreams. I manifested the dream life anyway, energy and frequency is like that! But I so wished I'd started back then to have something to look back on other than our memories of the time.

So, if I have any success with the YouTube Channel and become Mrs Beast! Then I have Jen to thank for that.

Some of the Reasons WHY Starting a YouTube Channel if YOU are OVER 40:

1. Unique Perspective

With age comes experience, and your unique life journey offers insights that younger creators might not have. Whether it’s parenting wisdom, career transitions, or navigating relationships, your stories can resonate with a diverse audience. When you get over 40 you KNOW STUFF. You have usually experienced a lot of stuff and have YOUR perspective on it. You are that niche subject / business idea that you've been looking for. And the over 40's are massively under-represented on there. There are millions of people in the world, looking for someone like you / me to connect to and relate to (even if you feel pretty useless right now... like myself).

2. Community Building

YouTube is not just about content creation; it’s about connection. The world is so divided right now. People are living in fear and disconnect. Sharing your passions, your energy and perspective can help you build a community of like-minded individuals who appreciate your perspective. Your people are out there! I had to move all the way to Bali to realise this. That voice of pure light and love, that held me when I was at my lowest ebb, during my first Reiki session had held me by my shoulders and said: "The answers are within you. Look within. It is you. You are it". Many viewers are looking for authenticity, and who better to provide that than someone who has lived through a variety of life experiences?

3. Learning and Growth

Starting a YouTube channel is a fantastic opportunity for personal growth. You’ll learn new skills—like video editing, storytelling, and social media marketing—that can enhance your professional life and keep your mind engaged.

4. Flexible Creativity

YouTube allows you to explore your creativity at your own pace. Whether you’re into cooking, DIY projects, travel, or even book reviews, there’s a niche for everyone. This platform is perfect for expressing your passions and hobbies.

5. Potential for Income

While it shouldn’t be your primary motivation, there’s also the potential to monetize your channel. Many creators over 40 have turned their channels into viable businesses, leveraging their experience to create valuable content.

FLETCH - BE NOTHING LIKE

Hey you! My name is Fletch, a Northern girl from the UK, living with the love of my life (aka Mr Be Nothing Like) and our 2 children, Lilly + Bertie Boo. We're about to embark on some big life moves, selling our things to move to the other side of the world, Bali, Indonesia to live a high vibe life of our dreams. You can find me in coffee shops working on my business (which runs passively), while researching on Instagram what to make for dinner. And at home (as I really am a home girl), world schooling my children, doing yoga, meditating, being in nature. I created this blog to share everything I have learnt about creating a freedom life. A life of your dreams, through harnessing energy + vibration to create a life where you feel happy, balanced, successful and free. A life you deserve. A life that you love. There is another way. I'm sharing everything that I know.
