We are from a design background too - having owned our own branding agency, where we used the full Adobe suite that took us years of learning and now Canva has changed all that for us. It's THAT easy to use. As a beginner, you can get by on the free Canva Plan, which has more than enough features to create brilliant thumbnails. We started with the free account many years ago, but upgraded to the paid subscription because of the added features that it had that helped out businesses. But I must point out that you definitely don't need the paid version as a beginner.
