If you're new here, hello, I'm Fletch and I'm currently travelling full time with my 2 kinds and my guy in Bali and South East Asia. (Which also then helps with the blog writing content too!). I share my journey as well as all the things that got me from feeling stuck in a rut to being mentally and financially free.
(here I am in Ubud Bali with a tiny stray kitten... and guess what I'm doing? Yes blogging!)
On this blog I talk about our world schooling journey, my self journey healing from depression, our spiritual awakening and manifesting this beautiful dream life in Bali as well as all the ways that we earn online passively in the hope that I can help someone else in their journey with all the skills and knowledge I have. Carry on reading this blog if you want to know how to earn TODAY / RIGHT AWAY on your blog. I'll show you step by step.
Have you ever wondered how bloggers actually make money? Or why people put out content for others to read? Like, what's the point. Can one even earn well by doing this? Well, this was me. I started blogging in 2007 as a blog that I started alongside my online gift business, which soon turned into a blog about mainly me and my small family life whilst running a business. And didn't start a blog to earn money, but as time went on and I found my passion in writing, I also started to realise just how profitable blogging can be. It doesn't happen overnight. But I can now tell you from experience that it begins with a passion and a love of the topics we write about firstly, followed by a personal learning journey for the blogger (myself included), learning everything possible about SEO and how to get seen by Google and other search engines. Which by this point, you can start to look at all the ways that you can turn your passion into an earning hobby.
One that potentially can change your life.
On this blog I will show you:
How to set up Google AdSense and get it added to your blog to start earning money the very next day after getting approved.
And in future blogs I will share best niches for blogging in 2025, how to start a blog, best blogging platform, places to get your blog listed on that will generate you FREE traffic, SEO tips (Search Engine Optimisation) for the beginners and things you must do to ensure a healthy start for a new blog. As well as SEO tips for growing your blog to monetization (when you've already got a blog and want to take it to the next level or 'levelling up' as I call it - the stage I'm currently at with this blog).
Whilst I'm not an expert, I know how to successfully start, grow and earn from blogging. I started a blog that earned 5 figures. This current blog has just got monetized and started earning a small amount of money daily which I plan to scale and show you how I'm doing it. So you can see how easy / or difficult it is to earn money blogging.
In my day job I'm an SEO consultant for 2 online brands. I also have my own online gift business that creates 6 figures with ZERO ADVERTISING. All sales from that business are driven purely by having good quality SEO - and blogging is much the same. Nail the SEO and the traffic will come. Traffic = views | Views = money if you follow the below and get your blog ready to be monetized. So I feel have a lot of skills to share around this topic.
Even though you may not be 'selling' physical products on your blog, the SEO principle is the same - to get more eyes / views on your content that will in turn generate more ad revenue. I'll share as much on that topic as you want to know. Please do drop me a comment to let me know what you would like to see on this blog and where you are on your own blogging journey and journey to your freedom life.
Blogging can be an extremely lucrative way to earn money online. It's a locationless career too, meaning that if you have the lust for travel and freedom (like me), then you can literally work from ANYWHERE in the world with your laptop and internet connection. From home, from a terrace on the rice fields. From a coffee shop in your local village or a coffee shop by the edge of a train track in Vietnam! Or in a coconut shack by the beach in Bali below...
Our whole family income comes from online earning and one of those ways is through having a monetized blog. And now instead of being based 'at home' blogging, we travel the world blogging. BUT I do want to be totally honest here, the blogging earning journey is one that requires patience and time - don't give up your job to start blogging and think that you will earn enough to replace your salary straight away. Because the real truth that not many will tell you is - you will not earn a single penny / dime in the early days of blogging. In fact you will spend on the blog on hosting fee's and time spent writing for nothing.
BUT Stick at it and there is no reason why (that sensibly), in 6 months to 1 year - you can get your blog monetized and start earning from your blog. And since timelines are speeding up on Earth, this really is no time at all. What's more, I know others that have done it faster than me. From this point there is the potential to earn really big amounts in a relatively short space of time. How you then scale your monetized blog is up to you. This blog will show you how to monetize your blog with Google Ads. Which is the easiest and fastest way to start earning from blogging (imo).
How Long it Took me to start earning from Blogging?
In truth, it actually took me 2 full years to actually start earning from blogging. Enough to fully cover what I was getting paid from my day job. And then I started this current blog (The Be Nothing Like Blog) in 2020 and am only just starting to earn money from this 4 years on. This blog is very early on it's it's earning journey because even though it is 4 years old, I started it as hobby only posting as and when. I have just got this blog monetized using my exact steps below. And I plan to grow this blog like I have in the past with regular quality content. 3x per week. Which will grow my readers, views and ad revenue in time. And I will share the growth of the blog to help you too.
Now that it is monetized, this blog trickles in money daily. And those daily amounts get paid into my AdSense account.
For total clarity, and I want honesty and truth on this blog because it's here to help - it is right now A TRICKLE - max $3 per day. So, Whilst this is not going to change my world right now, speaking from experience of earning online, I'm excited.
Because once you get your blog to this stage - this is the exciting part with a new blog - as soon as your blog get's traction and get's picked up by Google - you know that it is completely only down to numbers. Scale those numbers by continuing with your passion and you will start earning more and more. And the more you write the more this figure compounds. You could be sat on a goldmine right now and all you had to do was START. Further on in this blog I show how much you can realistically earn from blogging below.
From the moment a blog starts earning, it's earning potential is huge and blogging is an excellent way to earn money online. Imagine getting paid for something you love - if that love is writing! And best of all you can write whilst travelling and experiencing the world with your kids (if like us, that's your thing). It can completely replace your salary and turn into that 7 figure pot you've been dreaming of. Or it can start as another income stream to go alongside your regular one, giving you freedom / choices and options (and of course more actual money!), which is also nice.
Now that I am focusing on growing this blog to be the big earner that all blogs (yours included) can be! I can share it's progress with you to show you exactly how to scale a blog that's earning $3 a day to $100 a day! And $100 per day to $300 per day. Scaling is the key once you're on that blogging journey. And I plan to scale this blog in the sunshine as opposed to last time where I scaled in the UK sat looking out of the window at the grey and the drizzle. But first, read on to find out HOW to get monetized with adsense. So you can start earning from blogging.
Whilst earning from blogging isn't going to be a fast fix get rich quick scheme. I definitely recommend starting that blog TODAY. Join me! I can definitely pass on the information that I learned that got me monetized so that you can get monetized too. And earning online more than I ever could with my regular job. And now with this blog, show you from pretty early on in it's Monetization stage - how to scale those daily cents and pennies to pounds and dollars. And take you along with me on how that's going.
But first HOW DO I GET MY BLOG MONETIZED WITH GOOGLE ADS? Here's the good bit:
How does one make money online from their blog?
There are many ways actually, but the easiest and main way is through advertising. Actively or passively with Google AdSense and as your blog grows other sites that will triple/quadruple what Google pays (but first, baby steps, and more on these sites another day!)
Advertising on blogs
Blog monetisation through advertising is a strategy where you allow companies to place ads on your blog, and in return you earn revenue. It’s all about placing the right ads that resonate with the reader, turning every click and view into money in your pocket.
The more traffic and engagement you have. The more valuable your space is to advertisers. This is why having good SEO is crucial. Once you’re hitting around 1000 visitors per day, you can start to see meaningful earnings from ads. The easiest way to start earning on your blog from advertising is through Google Adsense. But after blogging consistently you might only have 100 views per day. There are ways to increase and scale you're blog, just like anything in life, when dealign with numbers. It really is just a numbers game. So if you got to 100 views a day from blogging, you can get to 1000. If you got to 1000 you can get to 10,000 ( see what kinds of amounts of money these kind of numbers can earn you below)
And this is where I started to start earning from blogging. And with this blog I've just started to have ads on this blog, which earn very small daily amounts. As mentioned earlier, these payments are very small - but from small acorns grow great oak trees and I know from other blogs that once acorn stage, the seed has been planted and if you write and learn, the blog grows from this point with very visible daily results £££$$$.
The below is an actual real example of a live ad on my blog.
For every person that views this little ad as they're reading this blog post, I get a small amount in payment in my Google Adsense Account daily. (This is not a lot $$££ see the exact amounts that you can expect to get paid from placing these ads throughout your blog below). But these amounts increase as my blog traffic grows and it compounds as I add more content and grow the blog.
Here is an example of a live ad on this blog:
This ad was placed here by myself at writing stage (using a snippet of html code given to me by google adsense). I don't decide what YOU see on this ad. Google decides on all of that to put the most relevant ads in front of the most relevant people. And I love that with Google Adsense that I don't have to do any of the guesswork. Just copy and paste the code and google does the rest, freeing me up to be creative and just write!
If you're interested and wondering how this blog has evolved and is becoming a new revenue source for me, wondering what you could start blogging about? Well you can literally start a blog about anything. Your hobby, You as a person. Your journey overcoming something and how you did it. I have another blog but this blog is around 2 years old and only just starting to earn for me. It started as my personal blog as a mum of 40 making sense of my life so far, talking about my healing journey from having depression all of my life to suddenly just not. A blog to document our journey from our idea and dream of wanting to make the move from UK to Bali, to actually making that move and moving my whole family to Bali. And then documenting our life as we did it. A personal diary if you like, that kept me accountable. As time went on it changed into adding more things that would help others. When I started blogging I didn't want to talk about the really personal stuff, but as time went on I realised that talking helped. And in me being personal, I could help more people and so I overcame any shyness and now talk openly on this blog and on my YouTube channel if I feel that it will help humanity. And that's my goal. I want to help. From talking about our spiritual awakening that we have been on these last couple of years and how that felt, what happened etc, so others also experiencing similar, didn't feel as alone as we did. And then onto more bigger topics of how we are all Energy, The Laws of The Universe and our spiritual work that we do and being a lightworker. If you're a blogger looking to turn your passion into profit, like I did, Google AdSense is one of the most popular ways to earn money from your website. AdSense is a simple and effective way to monetize your content by displaying targeted ads that earn you revenue every time a user clicks or views them. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to set up an AdSense account, explain how AdSense works, and give you an idea of what kind of earnings you can expect from your blog.
What is Google AdSense?
Google AdSense is an advertising program run by Google that allows website owners and bloggers to display ads on their site. Adsense is one of the most popular advertising networks for bloggers. It serves as a bridge between advertisers and blog publishers. You can apply for google Adsense even as a relatively new blogger (6 months of blogging content) and as your traffic grows you’ll start seeing cents and pennies mounting up in your account each day. But as your traffic grows, so do those cents and pennies that grow into dollars and pounds each day. Grow your traffic and you will grow your income. And the earnings are limitless. All through having a few ads on each blog that you write.
These ads are contextually relevant to your content and target the users who visit your site. Google serves a mix of ad types, including display ads, text ads, and video ads, and you earn money every time someone interacts with one of them.
How Does Google AdSense Work?
AdSense operates on a pay-per-click (PPC) and pay-per-impression (CPM) basis:
Pay-Per-Click (PPC): You earn money every time a visitor clicks on an ad displayed on your blog.
Cost-Per-Thousand Impressions (CPM): You earn money based on the number of times the ad is shown to users, regardless of whether they click on it or not. This is typically measured in CPM, or cost per 1,000 impressions.
Now that you have a general understanding of AdSense, let’s walk through how to set it up for your blog.
Step 1: Prepare Your Blog for AdSense
You don't have to have a big amazing all bells and whistles blog. Just start your blog. Write for 6 months and apply. Before applying for AdSense, you need to ensure your blog meets some of their basic requirements however. And if you're just thinking of starting a blog, it's best to know these before hand so you can start thinking at the very beginning of how in time you could monetize your blog. I wish I knew this info before starting my blog as it would have kept me accountable into writing more often to get my traffic up sooner. If I had a goal to work towards (like getting my blog up to around 100 readers per day and fast, Id have committed to writing a lot more than just one post per week. I saw this blog as my personal diary and so wrote content as and when. If I'd have set out much sooner on my growth for earnings journey, then I'd have been earning a lot sooner than I did. I want this for every blogger out there. Because why not. Get paid for doing something you love sooner. Google has specific policies that your site needs to follow to be eligible for AdSense.
Key Requirements:
Original Content: Your blog should have unique and valuable content that provides real value to readers. Avoid copying or plagiarising content.
At Least 6 Months of Content: While this isn't an official requirement, having a blog that’s been live for at least 6 months with consistent traffic and quality content can increase your chances of approval.
Adequate Site Navigation: Your blog should have clear navigation menus, a privacy policy, and easy-to-find contact details. Google likes well-organized and professional sites.
Mobile Friendly: Your site must be responsive and work well on mobile devices.
Enough Traffic: While there’s no set traffic threshold, a site with some consistent daily visitors (around 100–200 visits per day) will be more likely to get approved.
Step 2: Create a Google AdSense Account
Once your blog is ready, you can sign up for an AdSense account. Here’s how:
Visit the Google AdSense Website: Go to the official AdSense website at www.google.com/adsense.
Sign in with Google Account: You’ll need a Google account to sign up for AdSense. If you don’t already have one, create it.
Complete Your Application: Enter your website URL, personal details, and other necessary information. Google will ask you about your blog’s content, traffic sources, and audience.
Submit for Review: After submitting the form, Google will review your application. This can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. During this time, ensure your blog is well-maintained and has enough content.
Important Note:
During the review process, Google will check for content quality and adherence to its policies. Your account might be rejected if the site doesn’t meet the guidelines, but you can always fix the issues and reapply after a few months.
Step 3: Set Up AdSense Ads on Your Blog
Once your account is approved, you can start displaying ads on your blog. Here’s how to add AdSense ads to your site:
Log into AdSense: Go to your AdSense account and navigate to the "Ads" section.
Create Ad Units: You can choose from different ad formats, including display ads, text ads, and responsive ads. Customize the size and style of the ads to fit your blog’s design.
Generate Ad Code: After creating your ad units, Google will provide you with ad codes. Copy these codes.
Place Ad Codes on Your Blog: Paste the ad code into your blog’s HTML where you want the ads to appear. You can add ads to your sidebar, header, footer, or within the content. Most blogging platforms, like WordPress, also allow you to use widgets to place the ad code without touching the HTML.
Tips for Maximizing AdSense Revenue:
Positioning: Place ads above the fold (the part of the page visible without scrolling) or within content where visitors are more likely to engage.
Ad Balance: Use a balance between ads and content. Too many ads can negatively affect the user experience.
Responsive Ads: Choose responsive ad units to ensure ads look good on both desktops and mobile devices.
Step 4: Monitor Performance and Optimize
After your ads are live, you can track your earnings through the AdSense dashboard. Here, you can see how much you're making, what ads are performing well, and which pages are generating the most revenue.
Optimizing Your Earnings:
Experiment with Different Ad Placements: Test placing ads in various locations on your blog to see which areas generate the most clicks and impressions.
Focus on High-CPC Keywords: Research high-CPC (cost-per-click) keywords in your niche to attract higher-paying ads.
Improve Your Traffic: The more visitors your blog attracts, the more likely your ads will be viewed and clicked, increasing your revenue.
Potential Earnings from my experience in my own blogging journey
This is my experience. For comparison, I've also included the official research findings too below. My earnings vary, but with good traffic you can earn around $3 per 1000 views ($0.30 per 100 views) of a single ad placed. This may sound small but it adds up with constant traffic and engagement. Let's work it out below...
Let’s say you have 10,000 daily readers each reading just 3 of your posts. And let’s say you have put 5 ads on each of your blog posts. That would be (10,000 views x 3 posts x 5 ads) 150,000 views. For 150,000 views that would be $450 / £356. This is daily! Now earning $450 / £356 daily from a single blog is amazing right? Hence why we love writing for our blog because the earnings can be tremendous! Multiply this daily amount by 30 days in a month and you can start to see earnings and compare to monthly earnings of a salary. Using these figures you can think of this monthly as a salary of around $13,500/£10,600
It’s important to state here, that this isn’t guaranteed, and does vary daily as the number of readers fluctuates daily as well as the ad amount paid, but as a general rule you are looking at this average of $3 every 1000 views as a guide. On this new blog we average £0.35 every 100 views, which as we scale will scale to $3.50 every 1000 views at the moment but this previous example was from a lifestyle blog. Finance and money blogs ad revenue is much higher than this $3, think more in terms of $5-$13. So ad earnings really will depend on the niche you choose.
How Much Can You Earn with Google AdSense? The Official Stand point:
The amount you can earn with AdSense depends on several factors, including traffic volume, niche, visitor location, and ad placement. However, to give you an estimate:
Average AdSense Earnings:
Cost Per Thousand Impressions (CPM): Typically, you can expect to earn anywhere from $1 to $5 per 1,000 impressions. For blogs with low traffic, the CPM could be on the lower end, while established blogs with a lot of traffic may earn more.
Cost Per Click (CPC): Earnings per click can range from $0.10 to $2, depending on the niche and the type of ads displayed. For example, finance or tech blogs tend to earn more per click than lifestyle or entertainment blogs.
Example:
If you have a blog that receives 10,000 pageviews a month, you could potentially earn between $10 to $50 per month from AdSense, depending on your CPC and CPM rates.
To earn substantial income with AdSense, most bloggers will need consistent traffic, good ad placement, and high-quality content. Typically, with around 100,000 pageviews per month, bloggers could earn anywhere between $500 to $2,000 per month, but it takes time to build up that level of traffic.
Ad placement is crucial for this. You will need to put your ads where they’re visible but not intrusive - like at the top of your blog or in-between paragraphs. Too many ads can be annoying for readers too. So try not to spam ads everywhere in your blog. It’s all about finding the perfect balance when it comes to your ads. One that earns well for you and doesn’t annoy the reader. That happy medium. I find around 3-5 ads per blog depending on the size of the blog. Although if I'm giving lot's of free and super helpful content to a page I will add more (like this) because the reader is getting loads of value from the blog and doesn't mind the ads it's almost like a trade off for good quality bumf - you don't mind skimming past the ads. But you can trial your own pages and dow whats right for your your style and readers)
So how do we go from 0-100 views (earning $0.30 per day), to 100-1,000 views earning $3 a day, from 1,000-10,000 views earning $30 a day and then from 10,000-100,000 views earning $300 a day? Well, To increase your blog views from 100 to 1000, you will need to focus on creating high-quality, relevant content, optimizing for search engines (SEO), promoting your blog on social media, building an email list, guest posting on other websites, and consistently publishing new content on a regular schedule, while also analyzing your data to understand your audience and refine your strategy. And this is the same for those bigger numbers, only you do it for longer. Stay committed and get better at your blogging game. But it's really not rocket science and you must remind yourself that if others are doing ti - then so can I! And this is my motto for everything in life. Everything is learnable!!
Conclusion
Monetizing your blog with Google AdSense is a great way to generate passive income, but it requires time, effort, and consistency. By focusing on high-quality content, growing your traffic, and optimizing ad placements, you can turn your blog into a source of income. Although AdSense earnings may start small, with the right strategy, you can scale your revenue over time.
So to summarise: there are huge earning potentials to be had from writing a blog and earning from it. But remembering these key tips will help you turn your writing hobby into a lucrative earning possibility.
Remember:
Content is king - create engaging content that attracts readers
Apply and connect google Adsense
Place ads sensibly and carefully to keep balance
Content is king- I already said this, but I can’t reiterate this enough. Once you added the AdSense to your blog, it’s kind of time to forget about it. And only concentrate on the writing. Give informative, well SEO’d content regularly and concentrate only on content over earning. The earnings will come if you do this. But don’t expect to start a blog and for it to earn. Take the time to make writing a daily practice. Write about things that you love. Be consistent with the writing and as your traffic grows (which it will if you do all of these things) so will the earnings. In my first 2 years I earned $30 a year from my first blog. Not even enough to even cover the hosting fee’s. My blog was costing me! But as I found my feet and saw that my 100 views = $0.30 per day I saw how scalable this was and it was purely just a numbers game. Create 10x more quality engaging blog posts to 10x earnings to $3 a day. And once there create 10x more quality and engaging blog posts to 10x those earnings to $300 a day!
And this blog is now at this $1 a day stage. I plan to grow this blog and share how this is going on this blog so if you'd like to see it's growth and tips on how It's happening please subscribe to get notified on future blog posts.
